Gene was born on December 16, 1939, in Saverton, MO to Maurice F. Hayes and Louise (Cox) Hayes.

He married his high-school sweetheart, Ruth Ann Tarleton, on August 23, 1959, in Hannibal, MO.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann Hayes; two sisters, Virginia York and Patricia Carter; three daughters, Debbie (Mike) Moore, Jena (David) Mosley, and Kay (Tracy) Rademan; seven grandchildren John Moore(BreAnna Campbell), Sarah (Jake) Schannuth, Tyler Mosley (Lindsey Steinman), Jay (Jacqueline) Mosley, Kael Rademan (Maggie Caldwell), Kasen Rademan (Andrea Detterman) and Kyler Rademan (Spencer Locke) and eight great-grandchildren; Maddox, Macklin, Sloane, Palmer, Presley, Mevlyn, Ava and Harper.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gene worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 30 years until his retirement in 1993.

In addition, Gene was truly a jack-of-all-trades. Painting, remodeling, building (his pool house) were just a few of his carpentry skills. There was literally nothing he couldn't make or fix.

Gene loved the outdoors. He enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River, playing horseshoes, fishing with his buddy, Donnie Ragland, and mowing the lawn. He definitely is on the riding lawn mower in heaven. Whoever had that job lost it when he arrived!

Most of all, Gene cherished the time spent poolside with his wife, kids, grandkids, and great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Pallbearers will be John Moore, Tyler Mosley, Jay Mosley, Kael Rademan, Kasen Rademan, Jake Schannuth, and Spencer Locke.
